Canada is the centre for transnational mining corporations which  establish themselves here (especially in Vancouver) due to Canada’s lax  regulations. Canada’s mining companies hold an increasingly poor reputation with  respect to health, human rights, environmental protections, labour and  indigenous rights violations. In addition, the Canadian government, through its  Departments of Foreign Affairs, International Trade and CIDA, intervenes  directly in the affairs of other governments in order to create a legal and  political context which is favourable to the operation of Canadian mining  companies.

Our speakers will provide an in-depth analysis of the current  situation regarding Canadian international mining practices. Jen Moore will set  the stage by giving direct examples of lobbying, urgent actions and  resistance in mining-affected communities. Peter Julian will describe his  private member’s bill C-323 and explain the urgent need for corporate  regulation. He has consulted with mining justice activists (including  MiningWatch) and legal advisers to assist with the framework for  Bill C-323. This event will provide a format for discussion that could  contribute towards heightened awareness, community-based solidarity, resistance  and solution-building.
