Canada imagines itself as a guardian of human rights, but Canada’s financial and legal mechanisms are actually noteworthy for the protection they afford to—not people, but—corporations involved in violations and conflict zones. Instead of regulating extractive practices, Canada has been described as a “judicial paradise” of immunity for extractive companies. One suppressed industry report found Canadian mining companies are implicated in four times as many violations of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) as mining companies from other countries.
