In mining-affected areas, deforestation, erosion, water toxicity and water scarcity are the norm. Communities report loss of farmland, livestock deaths, and increased illnesses among those living close to mines. Open-pit extraction of gold relies on the technique of ‘cyanide-leaching’. Extracting one ounce of gold produces 70 tonnes of waste and uses 200-320 gallons of water per minute. In 2004, one-quarter of World Heritage Sites listed for natural value were at risk from past, current, or planned mining or oil and gas drilling.
